What power supply does my hot tub need?

What power supply does my hot tub need?

by chelsea Hopper 20 Jun 2025

When installing a hot tub, one question we often get is: “What power supply does my hot tub need?”. Understanding the power requirements of a hot tub is crucial for ensuring smooth installation and operation. We’re here to support our customers at every stage. In this blog post, we’ll break down the different power supply options for hot tubs and explain what you need to consider for your specific setup.

We’re here to support our customers

13AMP Power Supply (Standard 3-Pin Plug)

The most common power supply for smaller hot tubs is 13AMP, which runs off a standard 3-pin plug. This type of setup is typically used for portable or inflatable hot tubs. It is easy to install and doesn’t require any hard wiring or complicated electrical work. A 13AMP hot tub can be plugged into an existing socket in your home, making installation much quicker.

However, it’s important to note that 13AMP hot tubs are generally less powerful than their larger counterparts. They may not offer the same level of heating or jet power as a more robust system. However, for those who are looking for an easy-to-install option with a more budget- friendly approach, they can be a perfect solution. Consider RentaSpa, our rental service, which allows you to enjoy a full hot tub experience – even with the 13AMP option.

13AMP hot tubs can only run either the jets or the heaters at one time.  13AMPs cannot run both so if you are sat in the hot tub of an evening with the jets on, the tub will by default lose temperature.

32AMP Power Supply (Hardwired)

If you want a powerful hot tub with higher jet pressure and faster heating times, consider a 32AMP power supply. A 32AMP hot tub requires hardwiring to your home’s electrical system.

This type of installation should be done by a qualified electrician and allows for a more powerful system that can handle larger hot tubs and more demanding features.

The 32AMP power supply is commonly used for larger, permanent hot tubs. It supplies the extra power required for the robust pumps, heaters, and jets. While it might be more complicated to install than a 13AMP, it’s the better option for those who want a top-tier hot tub experience.

Which power supply should I choose?

When deciding between a 13AMP and 32AMP power supply, the key factors to consider are the size of the hot tub, the features you want (such as advanced jets or faster heating), and the installation requirements.

  • 13AMP hot tubs are ideal for those seeking a portable option or a simpler installation process.
  • 32AMP hot tubs are better for those looking for a more powerful system with enhanced features.

We offer both options, so you can choose the hot tub that best fits your needs and lifestyle.
